Statistics & Outcomes

My personal surgical outcomes are independently audited every year through the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR), the UK’s national body responsible for collecting, validating, and analysing cardiac surgical data. NICOR operates one of the most comprehensive clinical audit programmes in the world, with mandatory reporting, external validation, and continuous data quality monitoring. This ensures that outcomes are accurate, transparent, and benchmarked against national standards. Annual review of individual surgeon results (not available to the public) provides an additional level of professional accountability and supports continuous quality improvement in clinical practice.

In parallel, the outcomes of the Oxford Heart Centre are also submitted to and reviewed within the national SCTS reporting framework. These results are regularly presented and scrutinised within professional forums, ensuring openness and peer review at both institutional and national levels. The Oxford Heart Centre is a high-volume tertiary referral centre that manages a broad spectrum of complex cardiac conditions, and its outcomes reflect both the complexity of the cases treated and the strength of its multidisciplinary approach.

Together, national risk-adjusted reporting, independent annual auditing, and transparent presentation of institutional outcomes provide multiple layers of quality assurance. This comprehensive system ensures that patients receive care that is continuously monitored, objectively evaluated, and benchmarked against national performance standards. It also reflects a culture of openness, accountability, and ongoing improvement — all of which are fundamental to delivering safe, high-quality cardiac surgery.

For patients, this means you can have confidence that outcomes are not only carefully measured, but independently verified and transparently reported, providing robust evidence of clinical performance and commitment to excellence.

The data presented by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) are derived using a rigorous and highly structured national methodology designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and meaningful comparison. Surgical outcomes cannot be interpreted simply by looking at raw survival rates, because different surgeons and centres treat patients with varying levels of complexity and risk. Some units specialise in particularly high-risk or complex cases, which naturally carry greater operative risk regardless of surgical expertise.
